The defining feature of a Q-Switch laser is its speed. It delivers energy in extremely short, powerful pulses measured in nanoseconds. This rapid delivery shatters the targeted melanin particles without generating significant heat in the surrounding tissue. Other light-based treatments, like IPL, use a broader spectrum of light and longer pulse durations, which heat the target. The choice depends on the specific nature and depth of the pigmentation being addressed.

The sensation from the laser is often described as a series of quick, sharp snaps against the skin, similar to a small rubber band. The feeling is contained to the moment the pulse is delivered. Your own tolerance, the area being treated, and the settings used on the device all influence the sensation. A cooling device may be used on the skin during the session to manage this feeling.

The treatment aims to break down the pigment in existing sunspots, which the body then clears. In this sense, it removes the visible spot. However, the procedure does not change your skin's underlying tendency to produce melanin when exposed to UV light. New areas of pigmentation can develop with future sun exposure. Maintaining the outcome depends entirely on a consistent and thorough sun protection regimen.

The effectiveness of the treatment is linked to the contrast between the pigmented lesion and the surrounding skin tone. It is also determined by the type of pigmentation—whether it is superficial, like a freckle, or deeper, like some forms of melasma. It is helpful to arrive with your face clean and free of any makeup. Bring a list of your current skincare products, particularly any containing retinoids, acids, or other active ingredients. You should also have a list of any medications or supplements you take regularly. Be prepared to discuss your skin's history with the sun — how it tans or burns, and any past periods of intense exposure.
