Breast reduction mechanically alters the physical volume of your chest. During the procedure, the surgeon creates incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and often along the fold beneath the breast. Excess glandular tissue, subcutaneous fat, and redundant skin are then surgically excised. The remaining tissue is reshaped and the nipple-areolar complex is repositioned to match the new structural contour of the breast.
The anatomical outcome depends heavily on your existing breast footprint and tissue density. If your breasts are primarily composed of dense glandular tissue rather than fat, liposuction alone cannot physically reduce the volume. Your skin elasticity determines how the remaining tissue will be supported after the reduction. The surgeon bases the surgical plan on the mechanical limits of your chest wall and your natural skeletal proportions.

Breast Surgery
Fuller, and still in proportion
Seen from the front, before and after breast surgery at the clinic.
Breast Surgery
Volume, judged against the frame
A three-quarter view of the same operation, where the width of an implant shows.
Breast Surgery
The side view, which is the honest one
Photographed from the side, where projection and the fold beneath the breast are visible.
Breast Surgery
Shape as well as volume
A case where the breast was raised as well as filled — the two are different operations.
Breast Surgery
A measured change
Front view. The change is deliberately small — an implant is sized to a chest, not to a wish.
Breast Surgery
Raised, and filled
Side view of a breast that was lifted as well as augmented.
Breast Surgery
An implant that stays hidden
Oblique view. Enough tissue covers the implant that no edge reads through it.
A breast reduction is structurally different from an isolated breast lift. While a lift only removes excess skin to elevate the position of the nipple, a reduction physically removes mass to decrease the overall volume and weight. The procedure typically involves an anchor or lollipop incision pattern, depending on the amount of tissue being extracted. The nipple usually remains attached to its original blood supply during the surgical repositioning.
When preparing for your consultation, bring any previous mammograms, ultrasound reports, or clinical breast exam records. You must detail any history of breast cysts, biopsies, or familial breast conditions. Be prepared to clearly indicate how the physical weight of your breasts affects your daily function, such as shoulder indentations or posture issues. Provide a complete list of current medications, specifically noting any blood thinners.

Questions people ask
Answered as far as they can be answered in writing. Anything that depends on your own anatomy is answered by a surgeon looking at it.
What is a breast reduction?
A breast reduction is a surgical operation that extracts excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts. It mechanically alters the anatomical volume and physical weight of the chest. The procedure modifies the structural contour of the breasts to align proportionally with your existing skeletal framework.
What is the difference between a breast reduction and a breast lift?
A breast reduction physically extracts internal mass to decrease the volume and weight of the breasts. A breast lift only excises redundant skin to elevate the tissue without removing actual breast volume. While a reduction fundamentally includes a lifting component, a standard lift does not reduce the physical breast size.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Breastfeeding after a breast reduction is anatomically possible for some people, and it is not something anyone can promise you. The surgery physically removes glandular tissue and alters the internal milk ducts. While the surgeon attempts to preserve the biological connection to the nipple, the mechanical alterations can impair milk production and delivery.
Does a breast reduction use liposuction?
Liposuction is sometimes used during a breast reduction to extract subcutaneous fat, particularly on the sides of the chest. However, it cannot mechanically break down dense glandular breast tissue. The primary volume reduction requires direct surgical excision of the gland and redundant skin to alter the structure.
Does a breast reduction affect nipple sensation?
Altering the structural position of the nipple-areolar complex involves moving the underlying tissue and nerves. This mechanical shift can lead to changes in tactile sensation. Sensation may decrease, and whether it comes back is not something that can be settled in advance — it follows the technique your own anatomy requires.
