Q-Switch Laser — Face

A Q-Switch laser uses a single, precise wavelength of light delivered in an extremely short, high-energy pulse. This is designed to shatter pigment particles. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses a broad spectrum of light with a longer pulse duration. The suitability of one over the other is not about superiority, but about the specific diagnosis of the pigmentation—its depth, type, and the patient's skin characteristics. The correct approach is determined during the clinical assessment.

The sensation from the laser pulse is often compared to a small rubber band snapping against the skin. A cooling system is used on the skin's surface during the procedure to manage the feeling of heat from the laser. The intensity of the sensation varies between individuals and depends on the treatment area and the energy settings required for the specific type of pigment being addressed.

The skin's healing response to any energy-based treatment can sometimes involve producing more pigment, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is not a common outcome but is a known possibility. The risk is managed by a thorough assessment of skin type, careful calibration of the laser settings, and strict adherence to the sun protection and aftercare instructions provided. Unprotected sun exposure is the most significant factor in causing new or darker pigmentation.

There is no standard number of sessions. The treatment plan is based on the individual's skin, the characteristics of the pigment, and the body's response. Factors like the depth of the melanin, the cause of the discolouration, and skin type all influence the process. A preliminary plan is discussed after your consultation, but it remains flexible and is adjusted according to how the skin reacts to each session.

All Q-Switch laser treatments are conducted in a dedicated procedure room within our accredited partner hospital in Istanbul. The hospital's name and address are included in the formal treatment plan provided before travel. The laser is operated by a specialist. For non-Turkish speaking patients, a dedicated interpreter is present from your arrival at the hospital until your departure to ensure all communication with the clinical team is clear.

For your consultation, please prepare a list of all skincare products you currently use, particularly any with active ingredients like acids or retinoids. A history of any previous skin treatments and your skin’s reaction to them is also important. If you have any photos showing how the pigmentation has changed over time, they can be helpful for the assessment. It is best to attend the consultation with clean, makeup-free skin.
