Masseter Botox is an injection of botulinum toxin into the large muscle that closes the jaw. By limiting its strongest contractions, the treatment allows the muscle to shrink from overuse. The degree of change depends on the muscle’s initial thickness and strength, and on the anatomy of the jawbone beneath it. The aim is a less square, more tapered lower face, or relief from the tension of clenching and grinding.
The effect is assessed against the rest of the face, not against a photograph. A reduction in the width of the lower jaw has to balance with the width of the cheekbones and the projection of the chin. On some facial structures, reducing the masseter's volume can reveal or accentuate sagging in the skin lower down. The plan is to create proportion within your own features, not to replicate an effect seen on someone else.

The masseter is one of several chewing muscles; reducing its bulk does not affect normal eating. Where the muscle's overactivity is the source of headaches or dental damage from grinding, that is the primary concern. The muscle will reduce in size as long as its activity is limited. If the underlying habit of clenching returns, the muscle can regain its previous size over time. The treatment manages the muscle; it does not remove it.

What is the difference between masseter Botox and jaw reduction surgery?
Masseter Botox addresses the size of the main chewing muscle. It reduces the muscle’s bulk by limiting its strongest contractions. Jaw reduction surgery, by contrast, reshapes the mandible, the bone of the lower jaw itself. One treats soft tissue, the other treats bone. The appropriate procedure is determined by whether the width of the lower face comes from muscle thickness, bone structure, or both.
How does Botox make the masseter muscle smaller?
Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks nerve signals that cause the muscle to contract forcefully. The masseter is one of several muscles used for chewing, so normal function is not affected, but the powerful clenching that causes overuse is reduced. With this reduction in strenuous activity, the muscle loses volume over time, a process known as atrophy. The muscle tissue shrinks; it is not removed.
How much will my jawline change with masseter Botox?
The extent of the change is governed by the anatomy of the individual. The primary factor is the initial thickness of the masseter muscle; a larger, overdeveloped muscle has more capacity to reduce in size.
