Leg Liposuction

Liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a method for weight loss. It removes specific, localised deposits of subcutaneous fat that resist diet and exercise. The aim is to reshape the line of the thigh, knee or calf. The amount of fat removed has a minimal effect on overall body weight. Candidates are typically at or near a stable weight they can maintain, as significant weight gain after the procedure can alter the proportions that were established.

The final contour after liposuction depends on the skin’s ability to retract over the smaller volume beneath. Skin with good elasticity tends to conform well to the new shape. If the skin already has poor tone or is loose, removing the underlying fat can sometimes make this more apparent. The quality of your skin is a central part of the surgical assessment, as it helps define what the procedure can achieve and whether it is the most suitable approach.

The fat cells removed from the treated areas are removed. However, liposuction does not prevent the remaining fat cells in the body, either in the treated areas or elsewhere, from expanding if you gain weight. Maintaining a stable weight is the way to preserve the new contour. The procedure changes the distribution of fat cells, but not the body's fundamental ability to store fat.

The procedure is performed through several small incisions. Their placement is planned to be as inconspicuous as possible, often hidden in natural creases of the body. The exact number and location of these incisions depend on the specific areas being addressed — the inner thighs require different access points from the calves, for example. The surgeon plans these entry points to allow the cannula to reach the target fat deposits effectively.

Be prepared to discuss your full medical history, including any past surgeries, any tendency for swelling in your legs, and details of any significant weight changes you have experienced. A list of all medications and supplements you currently take is also essential for a complete assessment.
