The Shift from Surgical Excision to Energy-Based Remodeling

Historically, in the high-tech fields of facial plastic surgery and aesthetic rejuvenation, the correction of a "turkey neck" was done via a classic surgical neck lift (cervicoplasty or platysmaplasty). In essence, it is an excisional surgery that makes significant incisions behind the ears and under the chin, literally cutting off the excess skin and suturing the neck muscles together under them. It still remains the best option for very aged necks, but with aesthetic advances in medicine, minimally invasive alternatives have become widely available for patients with mild to moderate tissue damage who want to avoid long recovery time and surgical scars.

Clinically, the most up-to-date and very effective alternatives to a traditional neck lift are the so-called Energy-Based Devices (EBDs). Instead of cutting away, these modern innovations literally use the power of heat on the skin tissue. To be concrete, they are able to heat the deep connective tissues and the dermal layers to specific temperatures, thereby causing the immediate contraction of the tissues and, at the same time, forcing the body to produce large quantities of brand-new, very durable collagen and elastin which will be laid down by the tissue throughout the months to come.

Helium Plasma Technology (Renuvion)

Patient's neck, the focus area for a minimally invasive neck tightening procedure.

The top level of minimally invasive neck tightening is determined by the subdermal helium plasma technique, the name with which the technology is commercially known as Renuvion or J-Plasma. One of the reasons why it constitutes a major change is that it is the strongest tissue-contracting technology currently on the market that doesn't necessitate big excisional cutting of the patient. In a way, it works very much like a laser, which is only a different energy source. In essence, the device couples radiofrequency (RF) energy with helium gas to make a highly controlled, very fine stream of cold plasma beneath the skin's surface.

The operation usually goes along with liposuction to get rid of the double chin or the fat around the neck; the surgeon, therefore, places an extremely thin probe under the skin of the neck to carry out the treatment. After the plasma is released, it heats the deep fibroseptal network of the tissue to a very controlled temperature of 85°C and stays there only for a couple of seconds or even less. It causes the tissues to rapidly shrink and contract, which results in the skin tightening up to 30% immediately after the treatment. At the same time, an extremely hot and deep heatwave is created, which acts as an invisible shrink wrap, bringing the skin of the neck and throat areas tightly together, while the skin's surface remains cold so that thermal injuries are eliminated completely.

Deep Fractional RF Microneedling and HIFU

For those opting for purely non-surgical methods without having the subdermal device inserted into the skin at all, the latest trend in the industry has been to use a combination of Deep Fractional Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling along with HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound). Devices such as Morpheus8 or Profound RF use a whole group of silicone-capped fine needles that get to a deep level of fat in the neck and also the dermis. By reaching that targeted level, they deliver a shot of superheated RF to the areas that were localized as targets, melting the shallow layers of fat there while reconstructing the collagen in the deepest layers for a smoother texture and appearance.

When combined with HIFU like Ultherapy or the other types of technology in its group, the above method becomes a total and very thorough neck rejuvenation technique. Since HIFU totally bypasses the surface of the skin, it allows the concentrated ultrasound waves to get down and be focused on the deep level of the platysma muscle, the actual area which surgeons are physically tightening during a surgical neck lift. HIFU is known to cause some microscopic thermal changes within that muscle which gives the whole neck an upward lift from the very bottom.

Preserving Structural Integrity and Post-Procedural Boundaries

Maintaining behavioral and protective rules after such a treatment period is essential for people who want to have the best possible results from their aesthetic investment. The reason that the newer generation machines like plasma and/or deep RF have almost nothing to do with cutting out the tissue is that their power and outcome depend upon the body's ability to produce new collagen and the cellular restructuring via thermal stimulation of the targeted tissues. If your healing environment is disturbed in any way, your progress could be set back.

Therefore, during your first several days after your treatment, the formation of the new fragile collagen networks that are developing in the areas treated by plasma or RF should be protected at all costs. You will be advised to wear a customized neck and chin compression medical band if you had plasma therapy done as a part of the procedure. This is a very helpful piece of equipment not just because it gives support to the areas that might suffer due to the absence of support from the tissues, but more importantly, it is a method that prevents the skin from being detached, so it will have to fuse with the underlying tissues of the newly contoured region.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest recovery time for a tummy tuck?

After an operation like a tummy tuck, a patient should be back to doing normal work, desk work especially, within 2 weeks. The safest period to allow your body some rest from physically taxing activities and heavy work would be strictly 6 weeks, to be on the safe side. This time period will allow the internal muscle repairs to fully anchor and recover.

Why do I have to walk bent over after a tummy tuck?

This hunched walking for around 7 to 10 days after surgery is an important risk-prevention measure. It is to avoid any pressure or stretching of the still new wound area and the tightened abdominal muscles. If such tension should happen, the wound might split, or the muscle might stretch.

How long do I need to wear an abdominal binder?

You are supposed to wear the binder of medical-grade compression constantly for almost 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, it will help to protect your core muscles during regeneration by functioning like an external splint. Furthermore, it helps to prevent a potentially dangerous accumulation of bodily fluids and at the same time keeps the swelling down to practically nothing.

Is bed rest recommended for the safest tummy tuck recovery?

Not at all. Strict bed rest could lead to dangerous situations, for example, the occurrence of blood clots. As soon as you feel up to moving, you have to do brief 5-minute exercises (e.g., walking around the house) every few hours. This activity will be enough to keep your blood flowing well and healthy, which is very vital after a major surgery.

When will I feel completely normal again?

Generally by the end of the sixth week, the patient would already have quite a strong constitution and be really full of energy. There may be some minor swelling left which could go up and down with the days, though one thing for sure the wound mark should fade and flatten fully in at least 12-month ‍‌‍‍‌timeline.
