A tummy tuck mechanically alters the anatomical structure of your abdomen. During the surgery, an incision is made horizontally across the lower abdomen, typically just above the pubic area. The surgeon elevates the skin and fat to access the underlying abdominal muscles. Redundant skin is physically excised, and the remaining tissue is pulled downward and sutured. The primary objective is to modify the structural contour of the midsection by addressing both tissue laxity and muscle separation.
The surgical outcome depends entirely on your existing biological framework. Your skin elasticity, the volume of subcutaneous fat, and the degree of your muscle separation dictate the mechanical limits of the procedure. If you have significant intra-abdominal fat surrounding your organs, a tummy tuck cannot remove it; the surgery only addresses tissues outside the muscle wall. The structural plan relies on your specific baseline anatomy and the physical capacity of your abdominal tissues.

A tummy tuck is anatomically distinct from abdominal liposuction. While liposuction exclusively extracts fat cells using a cannula, a tummy tuck physically excises loose skin and repairs the abdominal wall. If your abdominal muscles have separated due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations, a condition called diastasis recti, liposuction cannot correct it. The structural suturing of these muscles at the midline is a defining component of a standard tummy tuck procedure.
When attending your consultation, bring a comprehensive medical history regarding any previous abdominal surgeries, including C-sections or hernia repairs. You must disclose any significant weight fluctuations or future pregnancy plans, as these biologically alter the abdominal tissues over time. Be prepared to point out whether your primary concern is the physical skin overhang, stubborn fat deposits, or internal muscle weakness. Provide a list of all current medications.

Questions people ask
Answered as far as they can be answered in writing. Anything that depends on your own anatomy is answered by a surgeon looking at it.
What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck, clinically known as abdominoplasty, is a structural surgical operation for the midsection. It removes excess skin, extracts localized fat, and mechanically tightens the underlying abdominal muscles. The procedure aims to alter the physical contour of the abdomen by addressing the tissue changes that occur after weight loss or pregnancy.
What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
Abdominal liposuction exclusively extracts subcutaneous fat cells using a suction cannula, relying on the skin to naturally shrink over the new contour. A tummy tuck physically excises redundant skin and surgically tightens the underlying abdominal wall. Liposuction addresses only fat volume, while a tummy tuck modifies skin laxity and muscle structure.
Where is the scar for a tummy tuck?
The primary incision for a tummy tuck is typically made horizontally across the lower abdomen, located between the hip bones and just above the pubic area. A secondary incision is usually made around the navel to reposition it after the abdominal skin is pulled downward. The exact placement is structurally planned to sit below most clothing lines.
Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
You physically can become pregnant after a tummy tuck. However, biological changes during pregnancy will stretch the surgically tightened muscles and the remaining abdominal skin again. Because this can reverse the structural modifications made during the surgery, surgeons generally recommend waiting until your family is complete before undergoing the procedure.
Is a tummy tuck performed under general anesthesia?
A tummy tuck is typically performed under general anesthesia, ensuring you are completely asleep during the structural modifications to your abdomen. The extensive nature of the muscle repair and tissue excision requires full sedation. The specific anesthetic protocol is determined during the clinical assessment of your surgical requirements.
