PicoSure is a laser that delivers rapid pulses of light energy into the dermis. This energy is absorbed by the tattoo pigment, which shatters the ink particles into much smaller fragments. The body’s own immune system then gradually clears these fragments. The effectiveness of this process depends on the colours of the ink, its chemical composition, and how deeply and densely it was placed by the tattoo artist. Some pigments absorb the light more readily than others.
The same tattoo on two different people will not respond in the same way. A person’s skin tone is a significant factor, as the laser must be set to target the ink while leaving the surrounding natural pigment unaffected. The age of the tattoo, any layering of new work over old, and the presence of any scar tissue from the original application also influence the process. A treatment plan is therefore specific to the tattoo and the skin that holds it.

A primary consideration is the final goal for the area of skin. Fading an existing tattoo to prepare it for a new cover-up design is a different objective from complete removal. Attempting to clear the skin entirely is a more demanding process and may result in a faint ghosting of the original design or subtle changes in the skin’s texture. How many sessions does it take to remove a tattoo with PicoSure?
The number of sessions required is not fixed. It depends entirely on the tattoo itself and the person's physiology. Factors include the ink colours and their chemical makeup, the density and depth of the ink, the tattoo's age, and the person's skin type. Whether the goal is to fade the tattoo for a cover-up or to clear it completely also significantly influences the plan. An estimate is only possible after a direct assessment of the tattoo.
What is the difference between PicoSure and older tattoo removal lasers?
PicoSure's distinction lies in the speed of its light pulse, measured in picoseconds—trillionths of a second. This is significantly faster than older nanosecond lasers. The aim of this rapid pulse is to shatter ink into smaller, dust-like particles, which may be more readily cleared by the body. The laser's wavelength is also effective at targeting specific ink colours, including blues and greens, that can be resistant to other lasers.
What does the PicoSure laser feel like during tattoo removal?
The sensation of the PicoSure laser is often compared to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The experience varies between individuals and depends on the tattoo's location, size, and density. A cooling device is used on the skin during the procedure to manage discomfort at the surface. The specific approach to managing sensation is discussed during the consultation.
Can PicoSure cause scarring or skin texture changes?
The laser is designed to target pigment while leaving surrounding skin tissue largely unaffected. However, the skin's response is individual. What do I need to provide for a PicoSure consultation?
For the consultation, prepare clear, well-lit photographs of the tattoo, taken from several angles. Note down its age, whether it was professionally applied, and if any part of it covers older ink.
