Is Body Sculpting Considered Plastic Surgery?

Not always; body sculpting can be surgical or non-surgical.

Differentiating Surgical and Non-surgical Methods

In cosmetic medicine today, where new and diverse techniques have emerged, "body sculpting" is not the name of a unique diagnostic or treatment method. Therefore, whether body sculpting is plastic surgery or not depends entirely on the type of body alteration method used. If patients receive procedures with anaesthesia, small-scale incisions, and the removal of tissues, the procedure would be plastic surgery. These invasive plastic surgeries have to be performed under the strict supervision of a board-certified plastic surgeon in a sterile operating room.

On the other hand, the cosmetic industry also features non-surgical body sculpting technologies based on thermal energy, ultrasound, and cryolipolysis that are quite fast to use and can give good results. Since these devices do not cause incisions, no blood loss occurs, and deep tissue damage is not inflicted, they are considered non-invasive aesthetic treatments rather than traditional plastic surgery. Even though they are usually available and sold via high-end plastic surgery clinics in a few months, their effects will be visible.

Surgical Body Sculpting: The Peak of Plastic Surgery

Patient contemplating body sculpting, which encompasses both surgical and non-surgical methods.

When sculpting is regarded within plastic surgery, it refers to the radical, dramatic, and lasting anatomical change of a human body. Tumescent liposuction, which literally means infiltrating a high-volume liquid into fatty tissue, is the primary method of surgical body sculpting. The latest developments in this area, the so-called VASER or High Definition liposculpture, involve the physician injecting specially formulated solutions inside the fat layer, emulsifying the fat cell walls using ultrasonic energy, and then removing those fat cells through a cannula, which is left in the body.

Besides this, surgical body sculpting includes excisional surgical procedures on patients with very serious skin laxity or overhanging tissue. Procedures like an abdominoplasty, i.e., tummy tuck, mammapexy, i.e., breast lift, or a lower body lift require the doctor to remove large quantities of skin by physically cutting it from the affected regions (amputation of redundant skin) and to repair the underlying separated muscular walls by deep internal suturing.

Non-surgical Body sculpting: Medical Aesthetics at Its Highest Form

It is a very effective non-surgical body sculpting option that is offered to persons with a desire for subtle fat removal along their body and skin tightening without requiring any invasive surgery or a recovery phase at all.

These types of treatments are external in nature, and they destroy local fat cells or stimulate collagen synthesis in the skin without making holes or cutting the skin. For instance, CoolSculpting is a treatment that leverages the principle that fat cells can be made to die by means of temperature (which is controlled via a system called cryolipolysis).

The dead fat cells are broken down and processed to be expelled as waste materials by the natural processes of the body, and it takes around eight to twelve weeks for the results of the CoolSculpting procedure to show. In addition to fat cell destruction, non-invasive approaches also use sophisticated Radiofrequency (RF) and High-intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technologies to enhance the effects of skin laxity in mild cases. These methods deliver the right dose of temperature energy deep into the skin matrix in a non-invasive and very targeted way. It instantly reduces the size of the existing skin network fibers while at the same time triggering the skin to produce new collagen at the local site.

Keeping Structural Integrity and Setting Post-procedure Boundaries

Respected doctors will be very clear in their instructions to patients in the post-treatment period when the recovery is most delicate and vulnerable. The reason is that, irrespective of whether we are talking about lifting after invasive surgeries or about the application of potent non-surgical energy therapy, all of the altered tissues and newly grown networks of collagen and the sensitive network of lymphatic channels need total protection from being subjected to mechanical stress in the healing process.

Movement and stress can cause swelling that is prolonged in time or cause contour deformities that have to be fixed in the future. Patients who are involved in the surgical procedure have to constantly wear the surgical post-operative compression garment that helps to flatten the contours for 4 to 6 weeks. It is this critical type of support that brings about the union of the skin to the superficial fascial layer of the underlying anatomy, at the same time, preventing the formation of fluid pockets. Moreover, a total ban is issued on the intake of tobacco and nicotine products by all the post-contouring patients since nicotine is a strong vasoconstrictor, a substance which will be the death of healing tissues and cause delayed or inadequate healing due to insufficient oxygen supply.

Frequently asked questions

Is body sculpting considered plastic surgery?

The answer is different depending on what method you choose. When the method used for fat removal or skin tightening is surgical, such as an operation with incisions and anesthesia, and the fat or skin is either physically lifted or physically cut, then the procedure is strictly plastic surgery. Whereas if it uses devices from the outside of the body to freeze fat or heat the skin without cutting, it is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

What is the difference between liposuction and non-surgical body sculpting?

In liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat through the extraction of a significant fat volume at a time by the means of suction. It is the fastest way in which fat is removed. On the other hand, for non-surgical body sculpting devices like CoolSculpting, fat pockets are actually frozen from the outside. This leads to only minimal results that come on gradually and over a period of months and that too after repeated treatments.

Can non-surgical body sculpting replace a tummy tuck?

Definitely not. There are certain abdominal conditions that can only be fixed with a tummy tuck, such as loose skin over a big belly or stretched-out muscles that result in a big belly. Tummy tucks also get rid of loose skin, so it's pretty much the only solution for big bellies and loose hanging skin on the belly.

Is body sculpting permanent?

That is right; regardless of whether you chose the surgical or non-surgical body sculpting, they are permanent in that the fat cells taken out surgically or destroyed naturally by cold are permanently removed from the body. But in the case of gaining excess body weight, your remaining fat cells will also begin to enlarge, causing weight gain.

Do I need to be put to sleep for body sculpting?

When it comes to surgical body contouring techniques like liposuction (which can also be an extensive procedure) or a body lift (which is the surgical removal of loose skin and reshaping the area with an incision), you have to have general anesthesia or heavy IV sedation to keep you unconscious during the whole procedure. In case of non-surgical body contouring treatment, there is no need of anesthesia at all; you can stay totally wake up during entire treatment ‍‌‍‍‌session.
