Laser Hair Removal at LIN Europe Clinic, Istanbul

Alexandrite laser hair removal directs a concentrated beam of light at 755 nanometres into the hair follicle. The pigment, or melanin, in the hair absorbs this light, which converts to heat. This heat damages the follicle, inhibiting its ability to produce new hair. The treatment is effective only on hairs in their active growth phase. The amount of pigment in both the hair and the surrounding skin determines how the laser energy is absorbed, which is the central factor in the treatment’s application.

A treatment plan is not based on a standard protocol but on an individual’s anatomy. The key variables are the colour and thickness of the hair, and the colour of the skin it grows from. A greater contrast between dark hair and light skin allows the laser to target the follicle more precisely with less risk to the surrounding tissue. For this reason, the same area on two different men will require different laser settings and a different number of sessions to achieve a similar reduction in hair.

Hair does not grow all at once. At any given time, a percentage of follicles are in a resting or shedding phase, while others are actively growing. The laser can only disable the follicles in the active growth phase. This is why a single session affects only a fraction of the hair in an area. Achieving a significant reduction requires a series of treatments, timed to catch new hairs as they enter their active growth cycle. The goal is a long-term reduction in the number and thickness of hairs.

Questions people ask

Answered as far as they can be answered in writing. Anything that depends on your own anatomy is answered by a surgeon looking at it.

Is Alexandrite laser hair removal permanent for men?

The goal of Alexandrite laser treatment is a significant, long-term reduction in hair density and thickness. It works by damaging hair follicles that are in their active growth phase. Because not all hairs are active at once, multiple sessions are required. Some follicles may eventually recover and produce finer, lighter hair. The outcome is a lasting reduction, not a complete and final removal of every hair. An individual's response varies based on hair colour, skin type, and hormonal factors.

What does Alexandrite laser hair removal feel like?

The sensation is often compared to a rubber band snapping against the skin, followed by a feeling of warmth. The devices used include a cooling system that directs cold air onto the skin's surface immediately before and during the laser pulse. This is designed to counteract the heat from the laser. The level of sensation varies between individuals and depends on the treatment area's sensitivity, the hair's thickness, and the energy settings used for the procedure.

What is the difference between Alexandrite and other lasers for hair removal?

The Alexandrite laser uses a specific wavelength of light (755nm) that is highly absorbed by melanin, the pigment in dark hair. This makes it particularly effective for individuals with a high contrast between their hair and skin colour — that is, dark hair on lighter skin types. Other lasers, such as Diode or Nd:YAG, use different wavelengths better suited for other combinations, like darker skin tones, where the risk of the laser targeting skin pigment instead of hair pigment is higher. The choice of laser is a clinical decision based on anatomy.

Why isn't Alexandrite laser suitable for all hair and skin colours?

The treatment relies on the laser's energy being absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, which then heats and damages the follicle. Alexandrite lasers are most effective when there is a clear target: dark pigment in the hair against a background of lighter skin with less pigment. For blond, grey, or red hair, which lacks sufficient dark melanin, the laser has no target to absorb its energy. On darker skin, the laser energy may be absorbed by the skin itself, not just the hair, which affects the safety and parameters of the treatment.

Where is the Alexandrite laser treatment performed and by whom?

The treatments are conducted in a private clinical room at an accredited hospital in Istanbul. A trained and certified practitioner who specialises in laser treatments performs the procedure. If required, an interpreter is present throughout the session to ensure clear communication. The specific hospital where your treatment will take place is confirmed in the written plan provided to you before you travel.

What information should I bring to my Alexandrite laser consultation?

For your consultation, prepare a list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you currently take, as some can affect skin sensitivity to light. Be ready to discuss your medical history, particularly any skin conditions, history of cold sores in the treatment area, or unusual scarring. It is also useful to provide information on your recent sun exposure and any previous hair removal methods you have used on the areas you wish to have treated.
