What are the Worst Days of Breast Augmentation Recovery?

The first 2-3 days are typically the most uncomfortable.

Every patient wants to know what they are getting into before they have surgery. This is totally normal. When you ask about the days after breast surgery you are really asking how long you have to be strong and deal with the pain. At Lin Europe Clinic we believe in telling patients everything they need to know. The end result is feeling confident for the rest of your life which’s great.. To get to that point you have to go through a short period where things are really tough and uncomfortable for the patient, at Lin Europe Clinic. For women the hardest part is usually, between day two and day four.

This timeline really changes everything. You do not have to be scared when the swelling gets really bad or your emotions are over the place. The timeline of recovery is not a line it is more, like a curve. This curve can get very bad for a while but then it gets better very quickly. Knowing that the worst part of recovery is going to happen and that you can deal with it makes it easier to get through. You can push through the part with a better mindset when you know what is going to happen with the timeline of recovery.

Day 2 and 3: The Peak of Physical Discomfort

It is weird. The day you have surgery, which is Day 0 is usually not the toughest day. You still have medicine in your body that makes you feel sleepy and that sleepiness helps you feel pretty calm. The truth is, surgery day is not so bad.. Then reality sets in on Day 2 or Day 3. This is when your body starts to get really sore. The surgery spot gets very inflamed. Your body sends fluid to the surgery spot to fix the damaged tissues. This means your body gets very swollen and tight on Day 2 or Day 3. Surgery is hard. The days after surgery, like Day 2 or Day 3 can be even harder.

Your breast implants are, under the muscle so you might get muscle spasms. Feel some heavy pressure during these days. It is like you did a chest workout. You simply cannot stretch your arms because they feel so sore. You will probably need some help just to sit up in your bed or open a door. We tell breast patients to stay ahead of the pain. Take the medication on a strict schedule rather than waiting for the breast implant pain to show up. This way you can manage your breast pain better.

The “Boobie Blues”: Emotional Dips on Day 4

When the physical pain starts to go around Day 4 a lot of breast surgery patients feel really down. This is what we call the -op blues or boobie blues. You might feel like crying or feel sorry for what you did or feel worried for no reason all. This is because of what’s happening in your body not because you made a bad decision. It is the anesthesia leaving your body not sleeping and the stress of getting better that makes the happy hormones, in your body go down for a little while. Breast surgery patients go through this. It is temporary. The post-op blues and boobie blues are real. They will go away.

When you look in the mirror you might see breasts that’re swollen and really big. They do not look like what you want them to look like in the end. This can be really scary. You have to remember that feeling bad is because of the chemicals in your body. The bad feeling does not last long. By the time you get to Day 5 or Day 6 you will start to feel and the swelling will go down and those bad feelings will usually go away and you will start to feel excited, about your breasts.

Sleeping Struggles: The Back Pain Factor

The pain that bothers a lot of patients is not even from the cuts they got. It is from their back. They have to lie on their back all the time with their back raised up a little so the swelling does not get worse. If they are used to sleeping on their side or on their stomach this is really frustrating. After a nights their lower back might start to hurt because they are not moving around and they are staying in the same position all the time. This happens because they have to stay in this position to stop the swelling and it is hard, on their back their lower back.

The discomfort is really bad around the time as the tightness, which makes nights a bit hard to get through that first week. Nights are hard because of the discomfort and the tightness. Using a wedge pillow or putting a pillow under your knees can really help take the pressure off your spine. This helps a lot.

The lack of sleep does make things harder. Your body gets used to it. Your body adapts to the discomfort. The lack of sleep. Once you get the okay to sleep flat which is usually after a weeks the discomfort and the struggle with sleep disappear right away. The struggle, with sleep disappears instantly when you can sleep flat again.

The Turning Point: Day 5 to 7

The good thing is that the tough days are not that long. They usually last less than a week. By, around Day 5 or 6 most patients start to feel better. The muscle tightness that was bad starts to feel more like a normal soreness. You can do things on your own again like washing your hair or making coffee. At this point you can stop taking the prescription painkillers..

This change is really big. You wake up one morning. You feel like yourself again. The heavy feeling on your chest is gone so you can breathe easier now. You are not ready to go to the gym or anything. You can have dinner, with your friends or go for a short walk. The bad time does not last long and when it is over you think to yourself that the hard part of the depression is done the storm is over and that is an exciting thing to realize about the depression.

Bloating and Water Retention

The first few days can be really tough because of something called “bloat belly”. The medicine you take along, with sitting around a lot and being constipated from the painkillers can make your stomach look really swollen. Some people who have breast surgery feel like they look pregnant a few days later. This bloating is not fun all. It can make you feel really heavy and tired which makes the whole experience feel even worse. Breast surgery can be tough and this bloating does not help it just adds to the feeling you have during the worst days of breast surgery.

Staying hydrated is really important. It helps when you walk around the house it gets rid of the fluids. If you drink peppermint tea it can make your tummy feel better. You can also take some stool softeners to help with tummy troubles.

It is good to remember that this is a temporary problem. Knowing this helps you not to worry much. Your stomach will be flat again when your body is done with the anesthesia and you start eating food again. Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated helps your body get back, to normal.
