Masseter‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Botox: Can Masseter Botox Slim Face?

Yes, it can slim the jawline.

A square, broad jawline is typically seen as a characteristic of strength and determination. However, for many individuals, it makes their face appear masculine, heavy, or broader than what they actually desire. Although most people believe that their face shape is mainly determined by the bone structure they inherited, it is actually the soft tissue, to a great extent, that determines the width of the lower face. The Masseter Muscle, which is the muscle mainly responsible for chewing, has a huge impact on the shape of the jaw. Just like a bicep grows bigger with frequent workouts, the masseter muscle experiences hypertrophy (growing larger) if it is constantly overused by grinding, clenching or chewing hard foods.

Masseter Botox, or as it is popularly known, “Jawline Slimming” or “The V-Line Injection” is a non-surgical treatment used to reduce the muscular bulk. By injecting neurotoxins into the masseter muscle selectively, we can stop the cycle of overactivity. In fact, this treatment not only conceals the issue; it changes the lower face area physically. At Lin Health Europe Clinic, we educate patients on the differences between the bone structure and the muscle mass so that Masseter Botox is the right treatment to create a more feminine, gentle, and slender facial outline.

The Mechanism: How Relaxing the Muscle Slims the Face

You probably wonder how a wrinkle-relaxer can physically make a face look slimmer. It is all about the principle of Disuse Atrophy. In a standard Botox injection in the forehead, the aim is to immobilize the skin to stop wrinkles from forming, whereas Masseter Botox focuses on the deep muscle belly to weaken the muscle. When Botulinum Toxin is injected into the masseter, it stops the muscle from getting the chemical messages it needs to contract strongly. The muscle is not paralyzed—you still have normal chewing and talking—but it is basically prevented from ‘flexing’ to the fullest during sleep or stress.

As the muscle no longer gets its intense daily “workout” through grinding or clenching, it gradually becomes smaller. The individual fibers of the muscles decrease in diameter within a few weeks. This causes the muscle volume to go down, which in turn results in a visible difference in lower face width. This is a natural biological process similar to a bodybuilder who stops weight training and thus his muscles become leaner. As the masseter progressively gets thinner, more of the jawbone shape underneath results, and this often leads to the creation of the much-desired “V-shape” or heart-shaped face without the need for invasive bone-shaving surgery.

The “Clench Test”: Distinguishing Bone from Muscle

One of the most important parts of the examination is deciding whether a patient’s wide jaw is due to bone or muscle. Masseter Botox is a treatment that targets soft tissue only and therefore does not affect the mandibular bone shape. If a patient has a naturally wide, flared jawbone, injecting Botox will have little to no effect on their silhouette. By doing the “Clench Test” you can figure out for yourself whether you have a great deal of muscular hypertrophy or your jaw width is skeletal. Press your fingers against the angle of your jaw below your ears and then bite down hard on your back teeth.

If your fingers detect a firm and hard area, i.e., a mass protruding under the fingers as that of a golf ball or a hard knot, then you are very likely to have Masseter Hypertrophy. This means that the muscular bulk accounts for a substantial part of your jaw width, and thus, you would benefit most from Masseter Botox. On the other hand, if you do the same and feel only the flat, hard surface of the bone with very little bulging or muscle movement, your width is likely skeletal. In this case, Botox can still be used to treat TMJ pain or headaches but will not provide targeted contouring or slimming effect comparable to the muscular hypertrophy cases.

The Timeline: Why Patience is Essential

The general public often misunderstands Masseter Botox as a quick fix. It is common for patients who are used to getting their wrinkles in the forehead removed in a few days to be upset with their jaw looking the same even two weeks after treatment. One must realize that disuse atrophy is a physically slow process. The neurotoxin starts working within 7 to 10 days, which results in a feeling of loosening of the face and a decrease in involuntary teeth grinding. However, it takes much longer for the muscle to physically contract.

Usually, the effect of the visible slimming can be seen from week 4. The result reaches its highest point, wherein the face has éthe narrow accordance with the tightnessé, normally between 8 and 12 weeks after injection. This delayed effect is due to the fact that the muscle fibers need time to break down and decrease in size after being deprived of stimulation. We tell our patients to think of it as a “slow reveal”. The transformation is so subtle that it is more likely that other people such as friends and family will notice it and subsequently compliment you. Furthermore, regularly experiencing the treatment every 4 to 6 months is essential as it stops the muscle from growing back, thus, resulting in longer-lasting results.

The Jowl Warning: Skin Laxity and Support

Despite the fact that Masseter Botox is a great change for many it does require careful planning for an older skin patient or one with pre-existing jowls. It is known that the masseter muscle provides volume support for the skin of the lower face. In young individuals with elastic skin, the skin bounces back easily to a thinner jaw as the muscle relaxes. But a rapid decrease in masseter size for older or lax-skinned persons can be equal to a loss of support.

So, if the muscle becomes smaller but the skin does not, the skin may sag, thus worsening the problem or leading to the formation of jowls. The so-called “Masseter Bulge” or “deflated balloon” is the result of this. At Lin Health Europe Clinic, our evaluation of skin quality is very thorough before we proceed. For those patients with borderline skin laxity, a combination treatment is frequently recommended by us. While using a low dose of Masseter Botox to achieve a slim jawline, we can concurrently perform a mid-face lift with cheek fillers or skin-tightening energy devices (e.g., Morpheus8). In this way, a slender V-line is achieved without losing the sharpness of the jawline or getting premature aging or wrinkles.

Lin Health Europe Clinic: Precision and Function

We at Lin Health Europe Clinic in Turkey, do not only consider the masseter as a cosmetic area but also as an essential functional part of the body. The masseter is the strongest muscle of the human body, and if you don’t use enough of it, then the most common reason for your failure. Injecting a “wrinkle dose” of 10-15 units is not sufficient for a muscle as powerful as this one. Normally, we use between 25 to 50 units per side (50-100 total) to adequately relax the muscle allowing the visible slimming effect be performed.

Besides that, our priority is safety. The masseter is situated very close to the Risorius Muscle, which controls your ability to smile. A smile that is crooked or asymmetrical and lasts for months may result from the toxin going into the Risorius due to an injector injecting the toxin too far forward or too shallowly. We perform precise anatomical mapping and often use ultrasound guidance to determine the exact depth and boundaries of the masseter belly. This means that the toxin is only given to the chewing muscle, which allows you to maintain your natural facial expressions while getting a sleek, contoured ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌jawline.

Frequently Asked Questions About Masseter Botox

Does‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Masseter Botox really slim the face?

Yes, but only by reducing muscle volume. If the wide jaw is due to the bone structure, Masseter Botox will not change the outline. It works best on patients who have muscle bulk that they can feel (hypertrophy).

Will I have trouble chewing food?

Not at all, you will never lose the ability to chew. You may feel a slight “chewing fatigue” when eating very tough foods like steak or gum during the first week, but Masseter Botox only lessens the excessive bite force, not the functional movement.

How long does the slimming last?

The slimming effect usually reaches its peak at 3 months and the total duration is 4 to 6 months. If you do regular maintenance treatments, the muscle will become weak more permanently, so you will be able to have longer breaks between the sessions.

Can Masseter Botox fix my teeth grinding?

It can. Actually, some patients who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) and TMJ pain go for Masseter Botox in the first place. The aesthetic slimming of the face is often regarded as a lucky bonus along with the medical relief.

How many units do I need for slimming?

How much you take depends on the strength of your muscle. A normal female patient needs 25-30 units per side, while male patients or severe grinders might require up to 50 units per side to see the effects of Masseter ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Botox.
